Diocese of Saint Augustine It was September 8, 1565 when a group of Spanish travellers landed on the northern coast of Florida and had mass in celebration of the settlement they were to set up. I was on the feast day of St. Augustine so they decided to honor him by naming there new home St. Augustine. Catholicism was brought to the shores of what are now known as the United States and Canada. (St. Augustine is the oldest diocese in the United States)
